Between Steps Explained: Cast, Release Date & What the Korean Title '연애박사' Really Means
🎬 Official mood teaser via Disney+ Korea (YouTube)
Between Steps premieres October 5, 2026 — and its Korean title is a joke at the male lead's expense. In Korea the drama is called 연애박사 (yeonae-baksa), which means "dating PhD." The male lead is, in fact, a PhD candidate. He is also completely hopeless at love. That's the whole gag, and "Between Steps" quietly deletes it.
Here's what the title actually does, plus the cast, release details, and the reason this particular premiere carries more weight in Korea than a campus romance normally would.
What Is Between Steps About?
Choo Young-woo plays Park Min-jae, a doctoral candidate in a university robotics lab. He was a competitive swimmer in high school until illness cost him a leg. Since then he's been careful with everything, romance included — he simply avoids it.
Kim So-hyun plays Im Yoo-jin, a clothing and textiles student who gets branded a troublemaker, loses her path into grad school in her own field, and ends up in the robotics lab instead. She is direct in the way Min-jae is not. She says the thing. Out loud. Immediately.
The teasers make the dynamic obvious. In one, Yoo-jin tells him plainly that she's confessing, properly, and that she likes him a lot. He says nothing. He walks home holding back tears, his leg hurting again, and grits through it alone. In the main trailer he finally answers with a warning instead of a yes: once he swallows something, he never brings it back up — he goes all the way. So, is she still coming?

Between Steps Cast & Crew
- Choo Young-woo as Park Min-jae — robotics doctoral candidate, former swimmer. You know him from The Tale of Lady Ok, The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call, and Head Over Heels.
- Kim So-hyun as Im Yoo-jin — the transfer into the lab. Child actress turned lead, most recently in Good Boy, and before that Love Alarm, While You Were Sleeping, and River Where the Moon Rises.
- Written by Min Hyo-jung — the writer behind Full House and Attic Cat. Yes, that Full House.
- Directed by Ahn Pan-seok — Something in the Rain, One Spring Night, Secret Love Affair, The White Tower.
Why This Premiere Feels Different in Korea
Ahn Pan-seok died in August 2026. He had finished shooting and post-production, so Between Steps airs as his final work, and Korean coverage has treated it that way since the announcement — nearly every article about a teaser leads with 유작 (yujak), "posthumous work."
That word changes how Korean viewers are approaching October 5. Ahn spent three decades on dramas about adults being careful with each other — Something in the Rain, One Spring Night, Secret Love Affair. A slow, awkward campus romance with long silences in it is exactly the register he built his career in. International audiences will mostly meet this as "new Kim So-hyun drama." In Korea it's a goodbye.
What "연애박사" Really Means
Break it down: 연애 (yeonae) is dating or romance, the whole relationship rather than the feeling. 박사 (baksa) is a doctorate — the actual academic degree.
Stuck together, 연애박사 is everyday Korean for someone who supposedly knows everything about love. And it is almost never a compliment. Korean speakers use it the way you'd use "oh, so you're an expert now" — 연애박사 나셨네, "look who graduated with a degree in dating." It's the phrase you throw at the friend handing out relationship advice with no track record.
Now stack the drama on top. Min-jae is a real 박사과정생 — a doctoral student. He has the actual degree track. He also cannot answer a confession without walking home in the rain. The title puts a genuine PhD next to a sarcastic one and lets them sit there.
"Between Steps" is a lovely English title. It gestures at his walk, at the pauses between two people, at hesitation. What it can't do is land the joke.
One More Thing English Coverage Skips: 대학원생
Korean promo keeps calling this a 대학원생 (daehagwonsaeng, graduate student) romance, and in Korea that word carries its own comedy. Grad school in Korea is a running punchline online — the lab that never closes, the professor who owns your calendar, the stipend that isn't one. 석사과정 is the master's track, 박사과정 the doctoral one, and Korean viewers immediately register the gap between them: Yoo-jin is 석사, Min-jae is 박사, which makes him her senior in the lab hierarchy before anything romantic starts.
English synopses say "university robotics lab" and move on. Korean viewers read a specific power structure and a specific kind of exhaustion into that setting before episode one.
🇰🇷 THE KOREAN SIDE
Korean coverage has gone in two directions at once. One is the director — almost every teaser article frames the drama through Ahn Pan-seok's death and lists his filmography like a memorial. The other is the pairing: Choo Young-woo is coming off an unusually strong run, and Kim So-hyun going from the action of Good Boy to a quiet grad-school melodrama is being read as a deliberate turn.
🌍 THE GLOBAL SIDE
Outside Korea the drama arrived mostly through Disney+ regional announcements, so the framing is the logline: mismatched couple, robotics lab, second chances. The English-language pieces I've read do mention Ahn's passing, but usually as one line of credits rather than the main story.
📊 THE GAP
Same drama, two completely different entry points. Korean viewers open with a sarcastic title and a director's farewell. International viewers open with a poetic title and a fresh romance. Neither is wrong — but if you go in knowing that 연애박사 is a tease and that this is the last thing Ahn Pan-seok made, the silences in episode one hit differently.

💬 Jamie's Take
I went in expecting a standard campus romance and came out thinking about how much a title can carry. 연애박사 is a tease, an accusation, and an academic credential all at once, and the drama is built so that all three land on the same guy. Add a director who spent his career filming people who can't say what they mean, and then this being the last time he does it — October 5 is going to be a lot. Bring tissues. Possibly for two reasons.
