Dead-End Job Explained: Cast, Netflix Release Date & Why the Korean Title 꿀알바 Means the Exact Opposite

Dead-End Job
꿀알바 — the horror series whose Korean title means the opposite

Netflix is calling it Dead-End Job. In Korea, the exact same show is called 꿀알바 — which means a dream gig. Easy money, barely any work, the kind of job your friends get jealous about.

Those two titles are not translations of each other. They are near-perfect opposites. And that gap is basically the entire pitch of the show — which is why it is worth knowing before Lee Jae-wook starts taking jobs he absolutely should not take.

What is Dead-End Job (꿀알바) about?

Byun Hyuk-jun (Lee Jae-wook) is a man in his thirties, buried in debt, going nowhere. Then he finds an ad for a strange employment agency called 거미인력 — Geomi Illyeok, literally “Spider Manpower,” rendered in Netflix’s English materials as Spyder Human. Its pitch: we only list 꿀알바. And our pay starts at 50 times the going hourly wage.

He signs up. What he walks into is not a cushy shift. It is a work site where something is very wrong, and where the pay scales with exactly how wrong it is. Netflix bills it as a mystery horror fantasy in 8 episodes.

The cast

Lee Jae-wook as Byun Hyuk-jun — the man taking the jobs. Alchemy of Souls, Search: WWW, Extraordinary You, Death’s Game, and the Disney+ series Royal Loader behind him; this is his first full swing at horror.

Go Min-si as Yeon-ju — and this role is the tell. She is an accident investigator for a workplace-injury protection body, pushing into Spyder Human to find out what is actually happening to its workers. Go Min-si comes off Sweet Home, Hellbound-adjacent horror territory, No One Is in the Forest, and the film Smugglers.

Kim Min-ha as Byun Ji-yoon, and Lee Hee-jun as Kang-jun — the agency’s boss, better known by the alias Mr. S. Choi Hyun-wook also joins the lineup.

Behind the camera is the part Korean viewers reacted to loudest. Directing is Kim Da-min, who wrote Netflix’s A Killer Paradox (살인자ㅇ난감) and directed the festival oddity Makgeolli Will Tell You. Overseeing the whole thing as creator and executive producer is Han Jun-hee — D.P., Weak Hero Class 1, Chinatown. The script is by Kyeong Min-sun (Seoul Ghost Stories, Tarot) and Lee Shin-ji (Concrete Utopia). Produced by Shortcake.

What 꿀알바 actually means

Break it in half. 알바 (alba) is short for 아르바이트 (areubaiteu) — a Korean borrowing of the German word Arbeit, “work,” which arrived via Japanese. In Korean it narrowed to mean specifically a part-time or casual job. Students do 알바. Everybody has done 알바.

꿀 (kkul) is honey. And in Korean slang, sticking 꿀 in front of a word means “the good kind of this”:

  • 꿀팁 (kkul-tip) — a honey tip, i.e. a genuinely great tip
  • 꿀잼 (kkul-jaem) — honey fun, i.e. hilarious
  • 꿀빨다 (kkul-ppalda) — literally “to suck honey,” meaning to coast, to have it far too easy

So 꿀알바 = the honey gig. High pay, low effort, minimal suffering. It is one of the most-searched job phrases in Korea, because it is the thing every 알바 worker is hunting for and almost never finds. The opposite, for the record, is 헬알바 — hell gig.

Now read the English title again. A dead-end job is the exact opposite idea: no money, no future, no way out. Korean audiences are being sold a temptation. English audiences are being sold a trap. Same show.

The title used to be even sweeter

You can watch the title darken in stages. Early trade reports called it 꿀단지 프로젝트 — “Honey Pot Project.” Netflix then locked the Korean title as 꿀알바 and announced it internationally under the working title Perfect Job (WT). Only later did the final English title land as Dead-End Job.

So Netflix’s own English name went from Perfect Job to Dead-End Job. They did not translate the Korean title. They spoiled it.

About that “50 times the hourly wage”

The 50x figure is a marketing hook, not a payslip — but it is worth doing the math, because in Korea it lands as a very specific number rather than a vague “a lot.”

Korea’s minimum wage for 2026 is 10,320 won an hour. Fifty times that is roughly 516,000 won an hour — somewhere around $370. An eight-hour shift comes out near 4.1 million won, which is close to double the full monthly minimum-wage salary (about 2.16 million won).

That is the arithmetic every Korean viewer runs instantly when they hear “시급 50배.” One shift buys you two months. Of course you take the job. That is the horror.

🇰🇷 The Korean side vs 🌍 The global side

🇰🇷 In Korea, the conversation is about the 알바 economy and the creator lineup. Han Jun-hee plus the writer of A Killer Paradox reads as a prestige-horror signal. And Go Min-si’s character being a workplace-accident investigator is not a neutral detail in a country where 산업재해 — industrial accidents — is a permanent front-page topic. The premise reads locally as a workplace-safety story wearing a monster mask.

🌍 Globally, it is being sold much more simply: Lee Jae-wook, creepy part-time job, Netflix horror. The labor angle mostly does not survive the trip.

📊 The gap: English coverage treats “50x pay” as a fun genre hook. Korean coverage treats it as the punchline of a job market where a 꿀알바 that good could only ever be a lie.

When can you actually watch it?

Here is the honest version, because listings disagree. Netflix has publicly committed to Q4 2026. Database listings and several Korean outlets point to October 9, 2026, and at least one international tracker has reported a push to late October. Netflix has not put a hard date in front of cameras.

What is confirmed: the first four episodes screen at the 31st Busan International Film Festival in the On Screen section, during the festival run of October 6–15, 2026 — alongside Blue Road (Netflix) and The Remarried Empress (Disney+). So the earliest anyone sees this show is in a theater in Busan, not on a couch.

💬 Jamie’s Take

I have done 알바. Everyone I grew up with has done 알바. And the reason 꿀알바 is such a loaded word in Korean is that it is basically a rumor — the job that pays well and asks little, always described by someone who heard about it from someone else. Building a horror series on that exact rumor is a genuinely good idea, and calling it Dead-End Job in English is a genuinely good title that is also, technically, a completely different title.

My one worry: 50x pay is a premise that has to escalate, and eight episodes is a lot of escalating. But with the D.P. creator and the A Killer Paradox writer steering it, I will absolutely be there. Probably with the lights on.
